Steve Smith has insisted that retirement is not on his radar as Australia prepare for the decisive fifth Test of the Ashes, starting January 4 in Sydney. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, the 35-year-old said he remains motivated, enjoys playing Test cricket and is focused on contributing to the team rather than planning his exit.
“I’m taking it day by day, series by series. I’m enjoying it, I’m contributing and having fun. There’s no real end date for me,” Smith said, playing down suggestions that his recent dip in form could hasten retirement.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest red-ball batters of the modern era, Smith averaged an extraordinary 62.84 at the end of 2019. While his overall Test average has since dipped to 55.85 after 122 matches, he has still maintained averages above 50 in several recent years, underlining his continued value to the side.
Smith also reflected on his evolving role within the squad, stressing the responsibility he feels as a senior player to guide younger teammates. “As an older player, hopefully I can help the players coming through and teach them the game of Test cricket,” he said.
Over the last four years, Smith has scored 3,376 runs in 47 Tests at an average of 46.88, including ten centuries. However, by his own high standards, the ongoing Ashes series has been relatively quiet, with 136 runs from three matches so far.
Standing in as captain during Pat Cummins’ absence, Smith has led Australia in three Tests, winning two and losing one. With Australia aiming to seal a 4–1 series victory, Smith will be keen to sign off the Ashes on a high note at his home ground, while reaffirming that retirement discussions can wait.
