At least two people were killed and several others injured in Kokrajhar, Assam, after a road accident escalated into violent clashes. The incident occurred when a Scorpio vehicle allegedly hit two locals in a tribal-dominated area. Following the accident, an enraged crowd attacked the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and fall into a ditch.
The driver, identified as Sikhna Jwhwlao Bismit, was lynched by the mob, while the two other passengers were rescued and hospitalised. One of the injured locals, Sunil Murmu, later succumbed to his injuries, sparking further unrest. Protesters reportedly blocked National Highway-3 and surrounded the local police station, prompting police to use lathi-charge and tear gas to control the situation.
To restore order, authorities deployed additional police, CRPF units, and the Army in sensitive areas. So far, 29 people have been detained, and investigations are ongoing. Officials stated that the situation is currently under control, but security has been tightened as a precaution.
