Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said the state government will rewrite history textbooks for high schools, indicating a significant shift in how Assam’s past will be taught. The announcement was made at the closing ceremony of the 10th Mising Youth Festival, attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
While outlining the decision, Sarma questioned the existing portrayal of Ahom warrior Bagh Hazarika in school textbooks. He claimed that Bagh Hazarika did not fight alongside Lachit Barphukan in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat, asserting instead that Mising leader Miri Handique played a key role in resisting the Mughal forces in Kamrup. These remarks challenge long-standing textbook accounts that describe Bagh Hazarika as an Ahom warrior who fought against the Mughals.
The chief minister also highlighted the historical contribution of the Mising community, crediting them with protecting land, culture, and identity in Upper Assam. His comments drew attention to how different communities have been represented in historical narratives.
In addition to the proposed textbook revisions, Sarma announced financial support for the Mising community, including a ₹100 crore grant for the Mising Youth Festival and ₹10 crore for the upliftment of the Donyi-Polo society. As the government moves forward with revising history textbooks, the changes are expected to influence Assam’s educational and cultural discourse in the months ahead.
