Angela Bassett Urges Empowerment of Black Creatives at 9th Annual ABFF Honors

At the 9th Annual American Black Film Festival (ABFF) Honors, Emmy-winning actor Angela Bassett delivered a powerful acceptance speech while receiving the Excellence in the Arts award, addressing the evolving entertainment landscape and the challenges faced by Black creatives. Bassett spoke candidly about the rapid technological changes, the rise of AI, and shifting business models, raising critical questions about who gets to tell stories and who gets to shape the future of Hollywood.

Reflecting on her own career, Bassett shared how she entered the industry at a time when Black women were underrepresented both on screen and behind the camera. She credited her perseverance to community, hope, and mentors who created space for Black stories to thrive. “Our stories are not trends. They are truths,” she emphasized, urging Black creatives to continue telling their own stories despite rising misinformation and systemic bias.

Bassett also highlighted the need to move beyond tokenism, advocating for empowerment, ownership, mentorship, and long-term investment in Black talent. She encouraged young artists to embrace their voices and reminded industry leaders to exercise courage over comfort in shaping the future of film and television.

The event also honoured Dwayne Johnson with the Entertainment Icon Award, Jennifer Hudson with the Renaissance Award, Salli Richardson-Whitfield with the Evolution Award, and Damson Idris with the Horizon Award. Oscar-nominated producer Ryan Coogler, along with Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian, were recognized for their work onSinners, presented by Michael B. Jordan and Wunmi Mosaku. Bassett’s speech stood out as a compelling call to action for inclusion, authenticity, and empowerment in Hollywood.
