A severe cold wave tightened its grip across Odisha, with temperature plunging sharply in several regions and dense fog compounding the discomfort for residents.
Meteorological department indicated that there is little likelihood of any immediate relief, with cold conditions expected to persist at least until the New Year.
Minimum temperature fell below 10 degrees Celsius in more than 10 cities across the state. Several locations in Kandhamal, Koraput,Rourkela, Jharsuguda and Nabarangpur districts have recorded particularly low readings, making outdoor movement difficult for residents.
The biting cold, combined with prolonged foggy conditions, significantly affected daily life, especially during early morning and late evening hours.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, dense fog is likely to prevail in various parts of Odisha over the next five days. A fog warning was issued for Sundargarh, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Kandhamal and Koraput for Sunday and Monday.
Weather officials also cautioned that coastal, southern and interior regions of the state may experience intermittent spells of dense fog during this period.
While coastal districts such as Puri, Kendrapara and Ganjam already reported foggy conditions, visibility in these areas largely remained unaffected so far.
In contrast, interior districts witnessed dense fog with reduced visibility, prompting authorities to issue advisories urging motorists to exercise caution while travelling, particularly during night and early morning hours.
Meteorological experts stated that there is no respite expected from the prevailing cold wave until at least January 3. Although a slight rise in temperature may be observed thereafter, winter chill is likely to continue across much of the state.
