A global spiritual conclave aimed at addressing the growing concern over unseasonal Rath Yatra celebrations commenced in the holy town of Puri on Friday. Organised by the Shree Jagannath Chintan and Chetana Worldwide Organisation, the event seeks to reinforce adherence to traditional rituals associated with Lord Jagannath and curb deviations from established customs.
The three-day conclave was inaugurated by the Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Puri, Swami Nischalananda Saraswati. It has brought together spiritual leaders, scholars, and devotees from around 53 countries, reflecting the worldwide following of Lord Jagannath and the global reach of Sanatan traditions. Several non-resident Odias are also participating, sharing perspectives on preserving religious authenticity abroad.
The conclave focuses on raising awareness about the significance of performing Rath Yatra strictly according to scriptural guidelines and temple traditions. Speakers stressed the importance of maintaining ritual sanctity amid the growing popularity of celebrations held outside the prescribed calendar and geographic context.
The event will conclude on the 4th of the month, with Gajapati Maharaja of Puri, Dibyasingha Deb, scheduled to attend the valedictory session. His participation is expected to reinforce the importance of adhering to age-old customs and religious discipline.
Earlier, the Gajapati Maharaja had issued a strong advisory to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), expressing concern over the organisation of unseasonal Rath Yatra and Snana Yatra events in India and abroad. He had warned that such practices contradict scriptural injunctions and could invite legal action if continued.
According to Hindu scriptures, Rath Yatra must be observed on Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya and Snana Yatra on Jyestha Purnima. Any deviation, the Gajapati Maharaja has emphasised, undermines the sanctity of the Jagannath tradition and the cultural heritage associated with it.
