Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has delivered a strong message to banks and financial institutions, stating that mis-selling financial products is not just unethical but a clear offence under regulatory norms. Addressing concerns over customer complaints related to inappropriate financial product sales, she stressed that banks cannot afford to compromise customer trust for short-term gains.
Mis-selling typically occurs when financial products such as insurance policies, loans, investment schemes, or credit cards are sold without properly informing customers about risks, charges, lock-in periods, or suitability. The Finance Minister underscored that such practices damage the credibility of the banking system and erode public confidence in financial institutions.
She further highlighted the importance of transparency, customer awareness and responsible selling practices. Banks have been advised to strengthen internal compliance mechanisms, ensure proper staff training and adopt strict monitoring systems to prevent misleading sales tactics. According to her, customer-centric banking should remain the core principle of India’s financial ecosystem.
The warning comes amid increasing scrutiny of banking practices and a growing emphasis on consumer protection. Regulators are expected to take stringent action against institutions found violating norms. The message is clear: ethical conduct and transparency are non-negotiable in the financial sector.
